Former 49er and San Jose State Spartan Jeff Garcia is headed to Texas. The Gilroy High grad has signed on as the Houston Texans third-string quarterback.
Garcia is an 11-year NFL veteran, who joined the 49ers in 1999. He led the Niners to their last playoffs in 2002.
The Texans are extremely short on quarterbacks. Right now, rookie T.J. Yates is the one taking the snaps. To make sure he has some veteran presence behind him, the Texans signed Jake Delhomme last week. This week, they decided they needed Garcia as well.
Garcia is familiar with the Texans quarterbacks coach. Greg Knapp worked with the 49ers quarterbacks from 1998 to 2000 and was the team's offensive coordinator from 2001 to 2003.
