Two-Alarm Fire Breaks Out at Popular San Jose Bakery

A beloved bakery in the South Bay went up in flames early Sunday morning.

Dick's Bakery in San Jose caught fire shortly before 3:30 a.m. San Jose firefighters were able to put out the blaze around 5 a.m. Investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire that left the business with significant smoke damage.

"They're investigating; it might be arson, I don't know," said Aaron Sota, the bakery's owner. Sota said it's not a total loss, and he defintiely plans to rebuild.

The two-alarm fire started inside and did not damage the exterior of the building located on Meridian Avenue, near Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and Highway 17, in the Willow Glen neighborhood.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they saw heavy smoke coming from the back of the building. They saw flames in the bakery's storage area. No one was injured in the blaze.

Dick's Bakery is a family-run business that has been around since 1947. Its burnt almond cake, among its many other baked goods, is very popular with regular customers.

The front door was boarded up Sunday with a message to customers about the fire and a thank you to the San Jose Fire Department.
