Home Depot Apologizes for Racist Tweet

The tweet came as part of the company's "College Gameday" coverage

Hardware megastore Home Depot apologized for a racist tweet sent from its Twitter account Thursday, which showed two African-American drummers with a drummer wearing a gorilla mask in between them.

The tweet came as part of its "College Gameday" coverage on ESPN and read: "Which drummer is not like the others? See more @CollegeGameDay pics at hdgameday.com #HDgameday #football"

The tweet was promptly deleted by the company, but not before it was screen-grabbed by another user and retweeted by over 200 users and sent to the NAACP's Twitter account by an angry Twitter user. Home Depot quickly apologized to the NAACP and the person who tweeted the organization the photo, saying the tweet was "dumb."

Soon after, Home Depot announced that in addition to reexamining their social media practices in lieu of the tweet, they also ended their relationship with the unnamed firm managing their Twitter account.

The person responsible for the tweet was also terminated, according to the company.

"We're also closely reviewing our social media procedures to determine how this could have happened, and how to ensure it never happens again," Home Depot told NBC News.
