Not Just for Jazz: Salsa Festival Takes Over Fillmore

Horns and saxes aren't just for jazz -- and neither is Fillmore Street.

The Western Addition throughway famous for its jazz history and its annual jazz fest will play host to salsa music this weekend, as Salsa Festival on the Fillmore takes over this Friday and Saturday.

16 different salsa-inspired musical acts will play at venues on Fillmore Street between Geary Boulevard and Eddy Street, according to event creator Roy Bennett who said the goal is to make Fillmore "like Bourbon Street in New Orleans," according to an interview in the San Francisco Appeal.

Tonight's festivies kick off at 7 p.m. and features a free performance by Fito Reinoso, as well as shows from Montuno Swing, Mazacote and Julio Bravo.

Saturday's lineup includes a free outdoor performance by Los Boleros at 7 p.m. Other acts include Aterciopelados, Fernando Lezama and Gary Flores y Brisa Latina, according to the website.

Passes to the two-day fest are $40, and can be purchased online at www.salsaonfillmore.com.
