City Wants Artists to End the Depression

The San Francisco Art Commission is planning something kind of neat for this fall: putting art into vacant storefronts in neighborhoods that are "economically depressed." (Sidenote: are there any neighborhoods that are not a little economically depressed right now?)

The program is pretty limited right now, focussing on only four spots. Here's hoping that the program's a big success and can expand to more areas. For example, right now the abandoned Mervyn's on Geary still displays the old slogan "Declare Your Style" -- which at this point is only appropriate if your style is "dismay."

Anyway, since nothing's more sad and frustrating than empty buildings, we love love love this idea. Or at least we love the idea of this idea. We'll reserve final judgment until we see the actual art. The application deadline is August 14.
