Bay Area Congressman Eric Swalwell Makes a Jab at Trump With NYC Coffee Tweet

Rep. Eric Swalwell is at the Oakland Teachers Strike Thursday, but on Wednesday he was in New York.

Swalwell, who’s a vociferous critic of President Donald Trump, tweeted out a selfie of him walking the extra block to avoid going into Trump Tower for coffee in the freezing cold, a light dusting of snow visible on his hair and coat: “It’s snowing in #NewYork. I need coffee. The closest cafe is inside Trump Tower. This is me walking to an alternative.”

His over dramatization of the situation wasn’t lost to his followers and critics.

“He’s standing outside Fendi, which is 57th and Madison. There is a Starbucks at 58th and Madison, on the same side of the street,” one person tweeted.

“Rep Swalell is a true hero. If you don’t believe me just ask him and he’ll tell you so," another person replied.

FiveThirtyEight editor-in-chief Nate Silver tweeted out a Google map showing Swalwell's three-minute walk, to which Swalwell responded: "Hi, I’m from out of town? (That’s the best I got). I’m from a place where we drive to and through to get our coffee. This is all overwhelming."

Recent reports claim sources close to Swalwell say he plans to run for president in 2020. The 37-year-old congressman visited Iowa after the midterms in November.

On Thursday, Swalwell tweeted out his support for public school teachers in Oakland who are striking about classroom conditions and pay. “For too many teachers in America, their class sizes are too big and their paychecks are too small. It’s time we put our kids first,” he said.
