For Third Time in October, Rain Falls in San Francisco, Bay Area

Sprinkles began falling in San Francisco and other parts of the Bay Area Monday morning, the third time it's rained in October.

More light showers fell throughout the Bay Area on Monday afternoon, with the bulk of the moisture hitting north of the Golden Gate Bridge.

NBC Bay Area meteorologist Christina Loren said that the precipitation is great news, not only for drought-parched California, but for the ski resorts in Tahoe desperate for snow.

Highs are expected to be in the 60s to lower 70s with southwesterly winds of up to 20 mph.

More rain is expected on Friday.

A separate Pacific Storm in the Gulf of Alaska had surfers and beach goers in Santa Cruz receiving word of 11 to 13 foot sneaker waves. The huge breakers drew dozens of expert surfers to the water.

Earl Hidayetoglu said he wasn’t prepared for the surf.

“I don’t want to use the obvious pun, but you can get between a rock and a hard place like I was,” Hidayetoglu said.

Hidayetoglu said he lost his board, and while he was trying to fight the powerful rip currents to get back to shore, a kayaker paddled over to help.  “The Pacific isn’t something to mess with,” he said.

NBC Bay Area's Michelle Roberts contributed to this report.
