AG Harris Sues Veterans Aid Nonprofit

Help Hospitalized Veterans' founder, president accused of mismanagement.

Help Hospitalized Veterans needs legal assistance.

The San Diego-based charity is being sued by California Attorney General Kamala Harris for breaking state law, according to reports.

Founder Roger Chapin and his successor Michael Lynch's charity brings arts and craft kits to veterans wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan -- but they also helped themselves, "grossly overpaid" themselves and helped themselves to "lavish perks," according to prosecutors.

The group raised $436 million since 2001, including $41 million in 2011, according to reports.

Only about 35 percent of that money goes towards veterans, according to a watchdog group that monitors charities. 65 percent is a more acceptable standard, according to reports.
