Body Found in Suitcase on SF Waterfront

A woman's body was found stuffed in a suitcase floating in San Francisco Bay Tuesday morning.

Police say the woman, who appears to be in her 30s, was curled up in a fetal position in the piece of luggage.

Police say the body was discovered after a young child saw the floating suitcase and told a relative who alerted firefighters nearby.   It was found near the Embarcadero and Folsom Street around 8:45 a.m. Tuesday.

San Francisco Police Department homicide Lt. Mike Stasko said the suitcase had no identication tags and appeared to be in the water for at least a couple days.

"Time is a huge factor in ID'ing a person, but I'm sure the suitcase affords some protection to the evidence connected to that body," San Francisco police spokeswoman Lyn Tomioka said.

Investigators are searching through missing person reports to try to find a match.

The suitcase and body were taken to the San Francisco medical examiner.
