Family members of Cesar Chavez from across the nation gathered in San Jose on Wednesday for the premiere of a movie about the civil right leaders.
The film, Cesar Chavez: An American Hero, is set to be released nationwide on Friday.
"It was very factual. It wasn't like Hollywood, glitz and glamour," said Rudy Chavez Medina, Chavez's nephew. "It showed the fields. It showed the struggle."
The movie depicts the life of Chavez between 1962 and 1972, when he called for the grape boycott.
The period also is when he fasted for the first time to draw attention to the non-violent aspect of his movement.
Chavez, who began organizing in San Jose, united farm workers and took on the powerful growers of California to fight for the rights of farm workers.
Family members said its important to get as many people out to the theaters to show Hollywood there is a market for this type of movie.
The premiere was held at the Tech Museum in downtown San Jose.
