Last Weekend for Coit Tower Until Summer

Iconic San Francisco tower to get needed makeover.

Coit Tower is closing for repairs.

The iconic tower on top of Telegraph Hill will be closed for repairs beginning on Nov. 18, according to the San Francisco Examiner. The San Francisco landmark will be closed for about five months.

The New Deal-era tower has damaged murals and other structural deficiencies that need fixing after 80 years looking over the bay, the newspaper reported.

The old concessionaire inside will also get the boot -- the family-owned operation, there since 1992, will be replaced with food from Anchor Oyster Bar owner Terry Grimm, the newspaper reported.

The tower goes dark until summertime at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, the newspaper reported.

Crews will repair and upgrade windows, plumbing, and lighting.
