Police Pursuit Starts in San Francisco, Ends on I-880 in Oakland: CHP

NBC Universal, Inc.

A police pursuit ended on Interstate 880 in Oakland Thursday prompting the temporary closure of southbound lanes.

San Francisco police officers attempted to stop an alleged robbery suspect and it that quickly turned into a chase from Polk Street, across the Bay Bridge and into Oakland, SFPD said.

“The freeway is behind us and we heard ‘boom, boom, bam!’ and we said, ‘what was that?’” said witness Robert Haynes.

NBC Bay Area's SkyRanger showed a Honda SUV with rear damage, which the CHP said was the suspect's vehicle.

Another SUV was crashed at the same time but SFPD did not confirm that car was involved.

Haynes was working construction near the freeway and witnessed the end of the pursuit as police drove against traffic to corner the suspect.

"I thought someone was running because I saw them going against traffic," said Haynes. "So I knew it was quite serious."

The crash caused major backup on the freeway for at least an hour.

The police took one unidentified suspect into custody.

No injuries have been reported and no details were revealed about the robbery that triggered the chase.
