Last Call: Some SF ATMs Shutting Down at Night

The days of midnight banking are over.

Several ATM locations in San Francisco -- formerly open to financial transactions at all hours, day or night -- are now shutting down during the wee hours of night and morning, according to the San Francisco Examiner.

It's "dangerous conditions" that have led Wells Fargo to close ATM locations in the Mission District at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m., according to the newspaper.

Customers using the Wells Fargo ATMs don't have the benefit of a door: other banks' ATMs are accessible only via a security door which customers' cards can open. Open-air ATMs such as the ones now shutting down at night have no such security measure.

The closures were first noticed by Mission District neighborhood blog Mission Mission, which noted that cash rules in the bar and restaurant-heavy Mission.

While bank officials acknowledge closing the ATMs, there has not been any reports of strong-arm robberies at cash machines or any other precipitating event, according to police.

So stock up on twenties, night owls, or pay the penalty.
