San Mateo County wants to keep driverless cars away for now

NBC Universal, Inc.

San Mateo County is trying to keep driverless cars from companies like Waymo out.

The county's board of supervisors on Tuesday passed a resolution that would make whether or not to let driverless cars operate in a county a local decision as opposed to a decision made by the California Public Utilities Commission.

The county said it's concerned about safety.

"My grave concern was that we would move forward and experience what San Francisco has experienced around AV vehicles," Board of Supervisors President David Canepa said.

Those who follow the driverless car business said there is also likely some public backlash as machines and artificial intelligence make a deeper move into our lives.
