Boy on Bicycle Suffers ‘Grave' Injuries in Collision With Car in Sunnyvale

A 12-year-old bicyclist suffered major injuries in a collision with a car in Sunnyvale on Monday night, a public safety official said Tuesday.

Shortly before 10 p.m. Monday, public safety officers responded to a report of a collision between a car and bicyclist at El Camino Real and Henderson Avenue, about a mile west of Lawrence Expressway, public safety Capt. Jeffrey Plecque said.

The boy suffered grave injuries and an ambulance crew transported him to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, where he was in critical condition as of Monday morning, Plecque said.

The driver of the car stopped and was cooperative with investigators, according to Plecque.

A preliminary investigation showed the bicyclist was heading north at the intersection against a red light and was struck by a westbound car, Plecque said.

Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factor in the collision, he said.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call public safety investigator Steve Cronin (408) 730-7109.
