Kerry: U.S. to Double Non-Lethal Aid to Syrian Rebels

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said the United States would double its non-lethal aid to opposition forces in Syria to $250 million, according to Reuters. He also said foreign backers had agreed to funnel future assistance through the rebels' Supreme Military Council. Kerry didn't directly say the U.S. agreed to supply weapons to insurgents attempting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad, which the rebels have sought. But he did say that the rebels' foreign backers were dedicated to maintaining support for them and "there would have to be further announcements about the kind of support that that might be in the days ahead" should Syrian government forces fall short of a peaceful solution to the crisis.
