NBA Rumors: Steph Curry Not Expected to Play in Tokyo Olympics

With the 2021 Summer Olympic Games approaching, NBA stars like Draymond Green, Kevin Durant and Damian Lillard are preparing to help Team USA bring home the gold medal next month.

However, Steph Curry will not be among those heading to Japan to play on the world stage, The Athletic's Shams Charania and Anthony Slater reported Monday.

Warriors star Stephen Curry has opted against playing for Team USA in the Tokyo Olympics this summer, sources tell me and @anthonyVslater. Curry had been deciding on participating over the last few weeks, and USAB expected him to be out of the available pool.

Curry, 33, is coming off an MVP-level season that saw him lead the league in scoring. However, Curry's legendary season wasn't enough to propel the Warriors to the NBA playoffs as Golden State was bounced from the NBA play-in tournament by the Memphis Grizzlies.

With his championship window growing smaller, Curry cleary is choosing to prioritize being at peak health and condition for next season when Klay Thompson's return should elevate the Warriors back into the Western Conference mix.

Curry won gold with Team USA in the 2014 and 2010 FIBA World Cups, but he never has competed in the Olympics. He withdrew his name from the team in 2016 due to injuries he suffered during the Warriors' playoff run.

Team USA now will prepare for training camp with Durant, Green, Lillard, James Harden and Jayson Tatum all in the fold. But they will be heading to Tokyo without Curry, who will spend the summer preparing for what he hopes is a return to title contention with the Warriors next season.
