Another Tesla Electric Car Catches Fire in Toronto Garage

This "hot car" caught flame in Toronto.

A four-month old Tesla Model S caught fire earlier this month while sitting in a garage, not plugged in to its charger, Business Insider is reporting.

The Fremont-based electric car maker has been sporadically plagued by reports of its vehicles burning, including three last year. The fires have been connected to its lithium ion battery cells, the company told federal regulators.

This latest fire happened after the Tesla's owner in Toronto, Canada parked the car following a drive. "After a few moments," the car caught fire and badly damaged the garage in an "intense" fire, Business Insider reported.

In a statement, Tesla said that "no vehicle is completely fireproof" and that "gasoline car companies expect an average of five to 10 times more fires per car than Tesla."

"The Model S continues to have the best safety track record of any vehicle in the world," the company added. "In this particular case, we don’t yet know the precise cause, but have definitively determined that it did not originate in the battery, the charging system, the adapter or the electrical receptacle, as these components were untouched by the fire."
