Safeway says it will move into a store abandoned by Target in El Cerrito.

Safeway Inc. has announced that it is planning to open a lifestyle  supermarket at the former Target store site on San Pablo Avenue near the El  Cerrito Del Norte BART station in El Cerrito.

Representatives from Safeway will be hosting a community meeting  at 7 p.m. today at the site, 11450 San Pablo Avenue just south of the BART  station, to answer questions about the project and listen to ideas from  community members, according to Safeway representatives.

So far plans include the new supermarket, retail shops and a  Safeway gas station. The new supermarket will replace the existing Safeway  supermarket at 10636 San Pablo Ave, which opened in 1971.
