More than 30 people arrested in an unincorporated area of Napa County near American Canyon face misdemeanor charges and possible jail time after sheriff's deputies raided a cockfight Saturday afternoon, police said.
At around 4:15 p.m., officers responded to reports of cockfighting, drug use and firearms in the 1400 block of American Canyon Road, American Canyon police Sgt. Mike Hunter said.
When sheriff's deputies arrived, 32 people were arrested and cited for participating in a cockfighting event. One other person was arrested and taken to jail, and another faces charges to be decided by the Napa County District Attorney's Office, Hunter said.
Those who were cited for the misdemeanor offense could be fined, face jail time or be put on probation, he said.
Officers have recovered at least 5 dead birds and 50 live birds, he said.
A number of people fled the scene when sheriff's deputies arrived, causing the California Highway Patrol to briefly shut down American Canyon Road, sheriff's spokeswoman Capt. Tracey Stuart said.
The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information about the event is urged to contact the sheriff's office at (707) 253-4475.
