Developers Hone In On Fremont BART Station

Future Fremont BART station to be prime real estate.

Currently industrial. In the future, prime residential and commercial.

The conversion of the area around the Fremont BART station has begun, with developer Lennar the first to scoop up 100 acres from Union Pacific to convert into housing and retail, according to the Silicon Valley Business Journal.

Lennar is "contemplating a huge housing and commercial project" near the Tesla Motors, Inc. factory, the newspaper reported. Homebuilder Toll Bros. is also "developing" 34 acres near the BART station into 1,000 housing units.

The BART station is slated to open in 2015. That makes the area around it prime for development -- and in this case, the area is undeveloped, the newspaper reported.

New BART stations are also spurring development in other cities, including Milpitas.
