Golden Gate Park Easter Egg Hunt

Thousands scour park for hidden eggs

Thousands of kids and their families got a hop, skip and a jump on Easter weekend in Golden Gate Park Saturday with egg hunts, carnival rides and other treats at "Eggstravaganza" - a third annual city event to usher in spring.

In addition to kids' activities, Eggstravaganza attendees today tasted the products of a barbecued rib cook-off between San Francisco's fire, police and Recreation and Parks departments.

San Francisco County Supervisors David Chiu, Mark Farrell and Scott Weiner were among the judges for today's rib cooking competition.

Proceeds from the cook-off will go to the Rec and Parks Department's scholarship fund, which helps low-income families send their children to local recreational programs, city officials said. In 2011 alone, the department offered scholarships to more than 2,000 low-income San Francisco kids and their families.

Local residents can look forward to more family-friendly fun hosted by Rec and Parks throughout the year, including "Play Day on the Green" this summer, "Scaregrove" this fall and the yearly "Holiday Tree Lighting" in winter.
