“Lipstick Girl” Awaits Lung Transplant

They call her the "Lipstick Girl" because the 8-year-old Newark child has been committed to wearing pink lipstick every day since she was 3.

The ritual has become a welcome diversion from the health crisis little Doris Diaz is facing.

Doris was born with cystic fibrosis and is now hospitalized at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital waiting for a lung transplant.

“I don’t really feel good. My lungs don’t have that much air,” Doris said.

Dr. Carlos Milla says the availability of organs for kids is not as high as it is for teenagers and older people so it becomes unpredictable as they wait for a donor of Doris’s size.

As the Diaz family waits for new lungs for Doris, they are also dealing with her brother David’s health issues. He has cystic fibrosis too, and doctors say the fact that the two share a bedroom is not the best solution when it come to health.

For now, the family is focused on Doris and getting her new lungs.

And Doris is focusing on her pink lipstick and hoping her future will soon be a shade brighter.
