USGS: Magnitude 5.7 Earthquake Strikes off Northern California Coast

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake was detected off the coast of Northern California in Humboldt County Friday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A magnitude 3.3, was detected near Ferndale, California earlier in the day, about three hours before the second magnitude 5.7 which was detected 133 miles near Eureka, California.[[439333593, C]]

Later in the afternoon, the USGS reported a preliminary magnitude-3.9 earthquake striking near the coast of Northern California, about 25 miles south of Eureka.

A string of earthquakes were felt in the Bay Area this week, including a 2.8 on Thursday. Thursday's tremor was the eighth in a week. Six occurred on Sept. 14 and the seventh on Wednesday.
