Victims, Survivors of 1906 San Francisco Earthquake Honored

People gathered in San Francisco this weekend to mark the 109th anniversary of the 1906 earthquake.

The quake is the worst natural disaster in California history and killed roughly 3,000 people.

On Saturday morning, about 100 people gathered at Lotta's Fountain along Market Street at Kearny and Geary streets for a moment of silence at 5:12 a.m., the exact time of the April 18 quake. The group then placed a wreath on the fountain. The fountain became known as a place where survivors met after the earthquake.

The actual anniversary of the quake was Friday and there were other events around San Francisco Friday marking the date.

The only survivors are believed to be 113-year-old Ruth Newman and 109-year-old William Del Monte. It was not known Friday if they would attend the early-morning ceremony Saturday.

Mayor Ed Lee, San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr and Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White were also expected to attend.
