OPEN ROADS EVENTS? They grow in popularity with each passing day, as more cyclists, saunterers, and people who want to enjoy a street sans vehicles come out to savor the rare event. And though the car-free happenings do seem to cluster around our cities, from Los Angeles to Lompoc to the East Bay to Santa Barbara, there is, on occasion, the chance to spin or stroll along an open street that isn't based in a bustling town. Lovely Lassen Volcanic National Park is inviting visitors to enjoy a gorgeous stretch of in-park road, "...between Lassen Peak parking area and Summit Lake vehicle-free through Wednesday, 7/26." The Sunday, July 23 Facebook post invited nature lovers to come take in the car-less roadway, which runs through some glorious, tree-dotted, national-park-y terrain, but to be cautious around "any equipment" that's parked along the stretch. LASSEN NATIONAL PARK HIGHWAY... is just ahead, on Thursday, July 27. If you're a Lassen lover, then you know that the winter of 2016-2017 deposited a copious amount of snow in the park, making the straight-into-summer snow removal an extra-super huge job. It's always a huge, huge job, of course, one that's been admirably taken on by both the park's "road crew" with "help from plow operators at Cal-Trans District Two, and Whiskeytown National Recreation Area." But before all those cars return on July 27 to drive through the spectacular park, get your hike or biking in, at least along one stretch, through July 26.
