Remember free street parking? We don't either. And it's getting worse: the city is planning to introduce parking meters to 1,849 parking spaces in Golden Gate Park.
The idea has been floated (and shot down) before, but since we're basically broke officials are now backing the idea. The bulk of the meters will be around our touristy areas, like the de Young Museum, Japanese Tea Gardens, etc. In case the countless number of homeless people was not enough of a reason to stay out of the park.
“We are talking about a park that should at least have some symbol of environmentalism. Encouraging free parking in a park doesn’t make sense environmentally,” Supervisor John Avalos said.
They're expected $206,000 in new revenue from meters in the current fiscal year and then $1.41 million new revenue from the meters in the fiscal year 2010-11.
