Oakland Raiders cornerback Sean Smith pleaded not guilty Friday to a pair of felony charges for allegedly assaulting his sister's boyfriend in Old Pasadena on the Fourth of July.
Smith, 30, is charged with one count each of assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury and battery with serious bodily injury.
Smith allegedly beat the victim and stomped on his head near the corner of Arroyo Parkway and Colorado Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
A date is scheduled to be set Nov. 6 for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to require Smith to stand trial.
He could face up to seven years in state prison if convicted as charged, prosecutors said.
Smith is a Pasadena native and attended William Blair High School. He is an eight-year NFL veteran, playing four years with the Miami Dolphins and three years with the Kansas City Chiefs before joining the Raiders last season. He played three seasons of college ball at the University of Utah, beginning as a wide receiver before moving to cornerback.
