Bay Area Firefighters Travel South to Battle Southern California Blazes

Bay Area-based firefighters on Tuesday picked up their gear and traveled south to assist in the fight against wind-whipped blazes burning across Southern California.

At least two large blazes — Thomas Fire and Creek Fire — burning in Southern California have already scorched tens of thousands of acres and forced mandatory evacuations.

Under the cover of darkness, a strike team with firefighters from the Alameda County Fire Department, Fremont Fire Department, Hayward Fire Department and Oakland Fire Department rolled out of the Bay Area.

A strike team from Marin County and strike teams associated with Santa Clara County also joined in the fight.

More crews with Bay Area ties could be sent south throughout the day Tuesday.
