20-Foot Waves Expected Along Coast as High-Surf Advisory Takes Effect

Ocean waves as high as 20 feet are expected over the next two days across coastal areas from Point Reyes to the north down to Big Sur, according to the National Weather Service.

A high-surf advisory goes into effect Tuesday afternoon until Wednesday evening, with swells exceeding 20 feet, the weather service said. The advisory includes coastal areas in Sonoma, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Cruz and Monterey counties.

Meteorologists and Coast Guard officials issued warnings about sneaker waves that can pull unsuspecting beach goers into the sea. People walking along the beach should not turn their backs to the sea and fishermen should avoid fishing from rocks or jetties, officials said.

Also strong rip currents could quickly exhaust swimmers, they said.

Aside from the high surf, Tuesday is expected to be mostly sunny with temperatures reaching into the low to mid 70s in most areas around the bay, according to forecasters.
