19-Year-Old Driver Slams Into Alameda Police Cruiser, Injures Officer

Alameda police said a 19-year-old boy accidentally ran his Toyota late Wednesday night into a police cruiser, and was arrested after he fled the scene.

The teen's girlfriend, Lt. Hosh Durani said, stayed to help the officer whose car engine started to catch fire. Witnesses had to pull the officer out from the aftermath, Durani said.

The crash occurred about 11 p.m. Tuesday at 5th Street and Lincoln Avenue. Images from the scene showed the white Toyota had slammed into the driver's side of the black-and-white, which had then bumped into a pole.

The officer was taken to Highland Hospital, police said, and had been released by 7:30 a.m.

The teen was arrested, but his girlfriend was let go, Durani said.
