Cartoon Art Museum Loses SF Space, Seeks New Location

Cartoon Art Museum is going to leave its SoMa location.

Curator Andrew Farago told the San Francisco Chronicle that the building's lease was up and that the price per square foot was going to more than double in price.

"The landlords are giving us what considerations they can," he said, "but ultimately it’s a business decision.” Farago asserted that the 30-year-old organization will continue elsewhere.

Cartoon Art Museum will remain in the present space until June 28. Executives told the Chronicle that they would like to find a new spot nearby in SoMa but don't know if it will be financially feasible.

The museum bills itself as the "only museum in the western United States dedicated to promoting a greater appreciation of cartoons, comics, animation and illustration.

In the meantime, plans for the Cartoon Art Museum's annual fundraiser and standup comedy showcase are going forward for May 7 and there's a capital campaign accepting donations on the website.
