Driver Crashes Car in SJ, Leaps Over Overpass

A man was injured after he crashed his car and then tried to escape San Jose police officers by hurtling over an overpass in East San Jose Thursday night.

Officer Albert Morales said that police were investigating a traffic collision near Highway 280 and King Road in East San Jose about 9 p.m. When they approached the car, which had been in an accident, the driver ran out of the car and took off running down the freeway.

Morales said the driver jumped over the railing at southbound Highway 280 and Highway 101 and suffered major injuries when he fell 40 feet, landing on the King Road onramp to northbound Highway 280 near the Police Athletic League Stadium.

His two teenage passengers were not injured and were detained for questioning, and then released to their parents.

The California Highway Patrol arrived on scene and is currently assisting with the investigation.
