Police Activity Closes Interstate 680 in San Jose

All lanes of Interstate 680 in San Jose are back open after police spent much of Monday afternoon and evening dealing with a woman threatening to jump from an overpass onto the highway.

The report of the pedestrian at the Alum Rock Avenue overcrossing came in around 2 p.m., CHP Officer Ross Lee said. The pedestrian was threatening to jump, which prompted authorities to shut down the freeway to traffic, which didn't completely reopen until about midnight.

A Sig-alert closing both directions of Highway 680 at Alum Rock Avenue was issued at 2:48 p.m., CHP officials said.

Northbound lanes reopened as about 8:40 p.m. Southbound I-680, which was being diverted to McKee Road, reopened at about midnight.

San Jose police said she eventually surrendered and she was placed in a 72-hour hold.
