National Hispanic U. in San Jose Halts Enrollment

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - National Hispanic University in San Jose has stopped enrolling new students, citing financial problems.

The San Jose Mercury News reported Sunday that officials say the university will focus on serving its 600 currently enrolled students.

NHU President Gladys Ato says the admissions moratorium is necessary as officials navigate what she calls a "very difficult financial situation."
 
Four years ago the university was purchased by the private college chain Laureate Education, which announced plans to introduce Internet classes for up to 8,000 students.
 
Laureate declined to immediately discuss the next steps for NHU.  The company would only say they've invested "tens of millions" in the school.
 
Ato expects NHU's board and Laureate to announce their plans within two months.
 
Baltimore-based Laureate has 75 schools in 30 countries and about 800,000 students.
