Niners' Draft Position Looks Even Sweeter

Rise of quarterback Kyle Murray's stock could allow 49ers to get best player in the draft or trade down for more picks

One of the best developments of this NFL combine for the 49ers was the fine showing by Heisman-winning quarterback Kyler Murray.

The former Oklahoma quarterback’s stock is soaring after the combine, and speculation is rising, too, that the Arizona Cardinals – who have the No. 1 overall pick – will select Murray and trade second-year quarterback Josh Rosen.

That will leave the 49ers in a terrific position with the No. 2 overall choice to get the best pass rusher in the draft, Nick Bosa of Ohio State or Josh Allen of Kentucky.

Also, too, if other quarterback-hungry teams want to trade into the 49ers’ No. 2 position, such as the Jets (No. 3) or Giants (No. 6), San Francisco could move back a bit, still pick up an elite edge rusher and collect more selections in this year’s draft (because GM John Lynch has just six right now).

Dieter Kurtenbach of the Bay Area News Group wrote this week that, suddenly, the 49ers’ No. 2 position in the draft is “charmed.”

“No matter how this shakes out – no matter if Murray goes No. 1 or not – someone is going to want to be at No. 2 and they could pay handsomely for the privilege. The only question is if the Niners want to use the slot or not. What more could you ask for with a draft pick?”

Then again, Bosa has been evaluated by many as the best player in this draft, regardless of position. The 49ers need a dynamic disruptor, and Bosa could be the player to completely change the character of the San Francisco defense. Standing pat with the second pick and drafting Bosa would be a definitive win for Lynch and Co.
