Oakland's Minimum Wage Rate to Go Up Slightly in 2016

The minimum wage in the East Bay city will go up 30 cents with the start of the New Year.

With the ushering in of 2016 next week, Oakland workers who are paid at the minimum wage rate will be seeing a slight pay bump, city officials said.

Based on the local Consumer Price Index, the minimum wage rate in Oakland will increase from $12.25 to $12.55 starting on Jan. 1, city officials said earlier this month.

This annual increase is a feature of Measure FF, which appeared on the November 2014 ballot and was approved by nearly 82 percent of Oakland voters, according to city officials.

As a result of that measure's passing, minimum wage in Oakland rose from $9 per hour to $12.25 on March 2. This had an effect on an estimated 48,000 workers.

San Francisco joined in raising minimum wage to $12.25 beginning in May.

Oakland city officials advised employers that any worker who performs at least 2 hours of work in a particular week in the city - including temporary and seasonal employees - must be paid at least the minimum wage.

Employers were supposed to advise their employees of the impending minimum wage increase by Dec. 15.
