Oakland Police Asking People to Turn In Fireworks and Guns

Oakland police are asking people to turn in fireworks instead of breaking or setting them off this New Year's Eve.

Police said breaking the law will cost people a $1,000 fine, and that includes parents whose children set off fireworks.

Police also said the other major issue this time of year is gunfire. OPD will have officers patrolling specific areas of the city that are known for high amounts of gunfire and fireworks activity.

People can turn in fireworks at the following six Oakland fire stations:

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Way
  • 14th Street
  • International Boulevard
  • 34th Street
  • 50th Avenue
  • 98th Avenue

The illegal use of fireworks can be reported by calling the Fireworks Hot Line at (510) 238-2373. Gunfire should be reported by calling 911, or (510) 777-2133 by cellphone.
