Runaway Asphalt Truck Destroys Garage in Sausalito

The truck rolled into a two-story home, completely shearing it from its foundation

An out-of-control asphalt truck destroyed a garage in Sausalito Wednesday afternoon.

The truck's driver was going up a hill on Lower Crescent Avenue at about 2:40 p.m. when he lost control of the vehicle and it started rolling backwards down the hill, Mill Valley Fire Department Battalion Chief Scott Barnes said.

The driver couldn't stop the truck so he jumped out, breaking his arm in the process. The truck rolled into a garage, completely shearing it from its foundation, Barnes said.

No one but the truck driver was hurt, Barnes said.

Don and Gerry Beers were home at about 2:30 p.m. when the truck, loaded with asphalt, slammed into  their four-car garage. The garage was not attached to the house.

"The truck came down and tried to push the garage down the hill and luckily the garage resisted," Don Beers said.

The couple will be out of their home until the truck can be towed out. Crews were still working on removing the truck from the garage late Wednesday evening.

"We were all lucky," Gerry Beers said.
