A suspect who police said pointed a gun at officers was fatally shot in Fremont late Thursday.

Police said the incident started at 6:47 p.m. when officers located a wanted man who was a passenger in a traveling vehicle. Several police patrol cars responded to the area and located the suspect vehicle.

The driver stopped at the intersection of Fremont Bouleard and Nicolet Avenue to comply with police orders. The suspect then got out of the vehicle and ran toward a nearby gas station.

At 6:52 p.m., officers broadcasted a firearm was pointed at them by the suspect and that shots were fired, police said. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene and a revolver was found near his side with expended casings, according to police.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

An investigation is ongoing and initial indications are the suspect fired a gun in the direction of officers during the incident, police said.

The shooting occurred near the Brookvale Shopping Center. The shooting investigation also prompted the closure of Fremont Boulevard between Gibraltar Drive and Tamayo Street.

"It was like a war zone," Witness Todd Harlan said.

Michael Rose was shopping at a nearby supermarket when the shooting occurred.

"I heard multiple shots and customers were running to the back of the store," he said.
