Raiders' Conley Coming Back Slowly From Injury

Reports indicate second-year cornerback is limited to just lifting weights so far in offseason program after shin injury as a rookie

The Raiders are eager that last year’s No. 1 draft pick, Gareon Conley, will go into training camp this season completely healthy and ready to make an impact in 2018.

But as the team’s offseason program got under way this week, the former Ohio State cornerback still is not all the way back from injury.

After surgery to correct a shin fracture during his rookie season, Conley has yet to be fully cleared for all activities, reports Steve Wyche of the NFL Network.

Said Wyche this week: “(Conley) is lifting (weights), but they are going to take their time with him to make sure he’s good to go once training camp starts.”

Conley played just two games last season, and new head coach Jon Gruden says he’s eager to see what Conley and safety Obi Melifonwu, the team’s second-round pick who also lost almost all of 2017 to injury, can do in the fight for jobs in the secondary this offseason.

Cornerback is an area of need for the Raiders, who could use their first pick in the upcoming draft – No. 10 overall – on another corner. Already, the Raiders brought in more help with veteran free agent Rashaan Melvin, formerly of the Colts.

Conley, despite little playing time last season, appears to be confident he’ll make it all the way back. This week, Conley tweeted out a video about “Conley Island,” touting his total effort for “24/7, 365” that make the chances of besting him “zero percent.”

At this point, however, Raiders fans just want to see what he can do when he’s healthy. For now, at least, reports say he will be ready to go by training camp.
