SF Former Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi Works as Marijuana Consultant in Uruguay

San Francisco’s former Sherriff is fighting for marijuana justice abroad.

Matier & Ross revealed that Ross Mirkarimi recently returned from Uruguay, where he’s been working as a “consultant to the government on how to clear the path for legalizing medical marijuana.”

He reminded the columnists via text message that he sponsored San Francisco’s first regulatory framework that allowed medical marijuana dispensaries to open up shop in the city. He also said, “I was the only sheriff in California to support legalization for adult use.”

Former mayor Art Agnos told Matier & Ross that 'Cuál Es el Escándalo?' ('What Is the Scandal?'), Mirkarimi’s wife Eliana Lopez’s one-woman play about their domestic violence scandal that led to his suspension from office in 2012, will be performed in Los Angeles, where there’s interest in adapting it for film or television. It first opened last year at San Francisco’s Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts.
