San Jose Man Identified in Fatal 680 Crash

Miguel Lafaro, 29, appeared to have been asleep on the side of the road when his car was struck from behind on Highway 680 in Milpitas Saturday, CHP officials said.

The Santa Clara County medical examiner's office has identified a man who died after a crash on Interstate Highway 680 in Milpitas on Saturday morning as Miguel Lafaro, 29, of San Jose.

The two-car crash, which also injured a 40-year-old Milpitas woman in another car, occurred around 3:23 a.m. just south of Calaveras Boulevard.

Lafaro was in the driver's seat of a 2004 BMW that was stopped on the side of the road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The car's hazard lights were on, and Lafaro appeared to have been asleep when he was struck from behind by a Honda driven by the Milpitas woman, CHP officials said.

Lafaro and the woman were both taken to Regional Medical Center of San Jose, where Lafaro succumbed to his injuries.

The Milpitas woman was treated for moderate injuries.

CHP officials said both drivers were wearing seatbelts and that Lafaro may have been driving under the influence.

Three lanes of northbound I-680 were closed for about two hours after the incident.
