A van that slammed in a Hayward pole early Thursday morning intially caused thousands of people in the area to be without power.
But by 6 a.m., PG&E reported that only about 50 people were without electricity, down from 5,000.
Hayward police said the accident was reported just after 1 a.m. at Hathaway Avenue and A Street. The driver ran away, police said, and was taken into custody shortly afterward. His name had not been released.
