A Lafayette high school briefly went into lockdown this afternoon as police searched a nearby neighborhood for two burglary suspects.
Contra Costa County sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said Lafayette police responded to a report of a burglary at a home in the 1200 block of Pleasant Hill Road, about a block away from Acalanes High School, at 12:45 p.m.
It appears two suspects, a male and a female, were in the process of burglarizing the home when a resident returned and discovered them, Lee said.
The two fled, one in a car and the other on foot, prompting police to set up a perimeter and search the neighborhood.
As a precaution, the school went into lockdown during the search, said John Nickerson, assistant superintendent of the Acalanes Union High School District.
Nickerson said students were told to stay in their classrooms and get down on the floor. Doors were locked and blinds were closed.
Police were unable to locate either suspect and suspended their search at about 1:40 p.m. The school's lockdown was lifted a short time later.
