Police are reporting a successful and peaceful Mardi Gras celebration Tuesday night and this morning, with felony and misdemeanor arrests related to the downtown San Jose event less than half of those reported in 2008, a police department spokesman said Wednesday morning.
San Jose police Officer Jermaine Thomas said that between about 7 p.m. Tuesday and 2 a.m. Wednesday, officers made a total of 18 arrests connected to the Mardi Gras celebrations, with 12 of those for felonies such as weapons and probation violations. In 2008, police reported a total of 40 arrests after the event, including 16 of those for felonies.
About 39 citations, most of them traffic related, were written out around the Mardi Gras event, and five curfew citations were reportedly issued to party-goers under the age of 18, Thomas said.
