A 74-year-old woman died Monday after an ambulance and sedan collided in San Lorenzo late Monday morning, sending five people, including three emergency medical services personnel, to the hospital, according to fire officials.
The woman, a San Leandro resident, was a patient inside the ambulance, according to the Alameda County Fire Department. She was not immediately identified.
The conditions of the other four victims were not immediately available, but a spokesman for Paramedics Plus said the three injured medical service workers were in good spirits at Eden Medical Center.
"We're proud of our firefighters and the paramedics inside who continued to give care," said Deputy Chief Jim Call of the Alameda County Fire Department.
The crash occurred at the intersection of Lewelling and Hesperian boulevards, the fire department said, and the force of the collision caused the ambulance to overturn.
Authorities say the ambulance was going south on Hesperian on its way to a nearby hospital while the white Audi was headed east on Lewelling. One witness said the ambulance had its lights and sirens on.
An investigation into the collision is ongoing, fire officials said.
