A man died in a structure fire early Thursday morning in Antioch and the homeowner says he believes the man was homeless and broke into his garage to stay warm.
"It’s the tragedy of life," said Robert Avellino after the Contra Costa Fire Protection District put out the detached garage fire his W. 9th St. residence after 6 a.m.
Firefighters said the man who they tried to perform CPR on wasn't a residence at the home, and they didn't provide other details.
"We don't know who he is but it seemed like he was trying to keep himself warm on a cold night. It's really sad to think that," neighbor Robbie Russo told NBC Bay Area.
Early morning temperatures in Antioch were in the freezing low 30's, according to NBC Bay Area's microclimate weather forecast.
The blaze was contained at the garage and didn't damage the rest of Avelliono's home, officials said. A white SUV and most of the stuff in the garage were destroyed.
