BART Fined $28K Following Worker's Death

BART will appeal

The state has slapped Bay Area Rapid Transit with a nearly $29,000 fine for allowing unsafe work conditions that contributed to the accidental death of a transit worker last year.
Forty-four-year-old James Strickland was killed by a train in October as he inspected tracks north of the Pleasant Hill station.

The California Division of Occupational Health and Safety issued four notices against BART for serious violations. The agency says BART allowed employees to work along the track without train operators knowing they're there or employees knowing much about train movements.

BART officials say they're appealing the violation notices, but still plan to make improvements to their maintenance procedures.
