Bay Area Mayors Team Up to Distribute Turkeys Ahead of Thanksgiving

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo and Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf joined San Francisco Mayor London Breed in her city Tuesday to hand out turkeys as part of the 13th annual Mayor's Turkey Giveaway.

The three mayors joined forces ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday as part of a day of service, stemming from a competition between the three back in September to see who could turn out the most volunteers for the annual Coastal Cleanup.

"This time of year is one to be grateful for what we have, and to give back to our communities. This annual tradition brings the city and partner organizations together to share in the holiday spirit with those in need," Breed said in a statement.

"Thanks to the generous contributions of our donors, we're able to grow this program to help even more families enjoy Thanksgiving and the holiday season together."

During the visit, the three mayors toured several housing developments and community centers to hand out frozen turkeys to residents and community members.

With the mayor's turkey giveaway and more giveaways being held by other city departments, over 5,200 birds will be given away at more than 70 giveaway events, the mayor's office said.
